UULE and search URL

Open in Google

What is UULE

UULE is Google's encoded location parameter. It carries a place name, packed as a small protocol buffer (role, producer and the canonical location) and base64-encoded after a w+ prefix. Append it to a Google search URL as &uule= and Google returns results as if you were searching from that place, which makes it the standard trick for checking local rankings from anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Enter a city, region and country, plus your search query. Region is optional.
  2. Copy the UULE value or the full search URL.
  3. Paste the UULE into any Google search URL as &uule=YOUR_VALUE after google.com/search?q=your+query, or just open the generated URL directly.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the Google results page to confirm the location Google used.

Canonical location format

The location is the city, region and country joined with commas and no spaces. Copy the spelling from Google's geo targets list when precision matters.

How to verify the encoding

  1. Generate a UULE for a city you know, e.g. Austin, Texas.
  2. Open the search URL and scroll to the bottom of the Google page to read back the search location.
  3. Cross-check the value with a second implementation, such as the open-source UULE converter crate or Valentin Pletzer's UULE guide, which document the same protobuf format.

Limits and edge cases

  • The UULE pins an approximate place, not an exact GPS point. Two nearby addresses can share one value.
  • Ads and some universal results may still reflect your real location, IP address or ad settings.
  • Encoding follows the documented w+ protobuf format described in Valentin Pletzer's UULE guide and the open-source UULE converter crate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the uule parameter?

UULE is a Google search URL parameter that carries an encoded location. Adding &uule=... to a google.com/search URL makes Google return results as if you were searching from that place.

How do I use the generated uule?

Enter a city and a search query, then press Open in Google or copy the search URL. The uule value travels in the URL, so the results page opens with your simulated location applied.

What format does the location use?

City, region and country joined with commas and no spaces, e.g. Austin,Texas,United States. That canonical name is what gets encoded. The region can be left out for cities like Berlin,Germany.

How can I verify the location worked in Google?

After opening the search URL, scroll to the bottom of the Google results page: Google shows the location it used for the search there. Change the city and generate a new URL to compare.

Does the location change every part of the results?

It strongly affects local and location-sensitive results such as maps, local packs and nearby businesses. Some elements like ads, personalization and your real IP-based signals can still differ.

Is anything I type uploaded anywhere?

No. The encoding runs in your browser with JavaScript and nothing is sent to a server. Inputs under 200 KB are kept in your browser's local storage so they are still there when you come back.
