Limits and edge cases
- A word is a run of Unicode letters or numbers, optionally joined by apostrophes. Extra spaces, tabs and line breaks never inflate the count.
- Chinese, Japanese and other scripts written without spaces count as single runs, so each unspaced stretch counts as one word. This tool does not segment CJK characters.
- Sentences are a heuristic: chunks ending in ., !, ? or … count as sentences, and text with words but no end punctuation counts as one sentence.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count words in my text?
Paste your text into the input box and the word, character, sentence and paragraph counts appear instantly. Use the Copy button to copy the summary or download it as a .txt file.
What counts as a word?
A word is a run of Unicode letters or numbers, optionally joined by apostrophes, so don't counts as one word. Extra spaces, tabs and line breaks never inflate the count.
How are hyphenated words and apostrophes handled?
Apostrophes inside a word keep it as one word, so don't is one word. Hyphens split words, so well-known counts as two words.
Do emoji count as words?
No. Emoji are not letters or numbers, so they add zero words, but each emoji counts as one character and as one character without spaces.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting runs in your browser with JavaScript and nothing is sent to a server. Inputs under 200 KB are kept in your browser's local storage so they are still there when you come back.
What is the difference between word count and character count?
Word count is the number of words, while character count is the number of characters including spaces. This tool also shows characters without spaces, plus lines, sentences and paragraphs.
