Limits and edge cases
- Regular expressions use the JavaScript flavor. Tick Regular expression to enable patterns like
\d+. - In plain-text mode the replacement is literal, so
$5stays$5. In regex mode$1-style capture groups are supported. - Whole words only applies to plain-text searches and uses
\bword boundaries, which treat ASCII letters, digits and underscores as word characters. - An empty Find box is a no-op: the input is returned unchanged with zero replacements.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find and replace text?
Paste your text, type what to find in the Find box and the new text in the Replace box. Every match is replaced instantly and the result shows a live replacement count.
Can I use a regular expression as the search?
Yes. Tick Regular expression and the Find box is treated as a JavaScript regular expression, so patterns like \d+ match every run of digits. In regex mode $1-style capture groups work in the replacement.
What happens to dollar signs in the replacement?
In plain-text mode the replacement is literal, so $5 stays $5. In regular-expression mode dollar sequences like $1 insert the matching capture group.
What does the whole-word option do?
Whole words only wraps a plain-text search in word boundaries, so finding cat replaces cat but leaves cats and catty untouched. It only applies in plain-text mode.
What if the Find box is empty?
Nothing happens. An empty Find box is a no-op and the input is returned unchanged with zero replacements.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Find and replace runs in your browser with JavaScript and nothing is sent to a server. Inputs under 200 KB are kept in your browser's local storage so they are still there when you come back.
