Limits and edge cases
- Hex bytes need pairs: the digit count must be even, so 414 is rejected as odd.
- Spaces, newlines and 0x prefixes are tolerated and ignored before decoding.
- Decoded bytes must be valid UTF-8 text, otherwise a clear error is shown.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert hex to text?
Paste hex values into the input box and the readable text appears instantly in the result box. Copy it or download it as a .txt file.
Do I need spaces between hex bytes?
No. Both spaced hex like 41 42 and continuous hex like 4142 decode to AB. Spaces, newlines and tabs are ignored.
Are 0x prefixes allowed?
Yes. Values like 0x41 0x42 decode the same as 41 42 because 0x prefixes are stripped before decoding.
Why do I get an odd digits error?
Each text byte needs exactly two hex digits, so the digit count must be even. For example 414 has 3 digits, which is odd, so add or remove one digit to make pairs.
Why do I get a not valid UTF-8 error?
Some byte values, such as ff on its own, are not valid UTF-8 text. Check that the hex came from UTF-8 encoded text.
Is my hex uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding runs in your browser with JavaScript and nothing is sent to a server. Inputs under 200 KB are kept in your browser's local storage so they are still there when you come back.
