Limits and edge cases

  • Removal rule: every character matching Unicode punctuation (\p{P}, which includes the underscore) plus common ASCII symbols (! ? . , ; : $ £ ¥ € © ® ± × ÷ and similar) is removed. Letters, digits, spaces and line breaks are always kept.
  • Apostrophes and quotes are punctuation, so don't becomes dont. Add ' to Keep these characters to preserve them.
  • Emoji (e.g. 😀) are kept, not removed.
  • Keep these characters preserves listed characters even if they are punctuation (e.g. @# keeps email addresses and hashtags readable). Also remove these deletes listed characters unconditionally, even letters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove punctuation from text?

Paste your text into the input box and the cleaned version appears instantly in the result box. Copy it or download it as a .txt file.

Exactly what gets removed?

Every character matching Unicode punctuation (category P, which includes the underscore) plus common ASCII symbols such as ! ? . , ; : $ £ ¥ € © ® ± × ÷. Letters, digits, spaces and line breaks are always kept.

Are apostrophes removed too?

Yes. Apostrophes and quotes are punctuation, so don't becomes dont. If you need to keep them, add ' to the Keep these characters field.

Are emoji removed?

No. Emoji such as smileys are Unicode symbols outside the removal set, so they are kept in the output.

How do the keep and extra fields work?

Characters listed in Keep these characters are preserved even if they are punctuation, for example @#. Characters listed in Also remove these are always removed, even if they are letters.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Removal runs in your browser with JavaScript and nothing is sent to a server. Inputs under 200 KB are kept in your browser's local storage so they are still there when you come back.
