Limits and edge cases

  • Auto-detect strips one prefix per line: leading spaces, digits, one optional delimiter, one optional space.
  • Detected styles include 1., 1), [1], (1), 1:, 1 -, plus multi-digit and indented numbers.
  • Custom pattern is a JavaScript regex matched at the start of each line, so type it without the ^ anchor (for example \d+\.\s?).
  • Keep only numbered lines drops every line with no detected prefix; otherwise plain lines are kept unchanged.
  • Windows (\r\n) and old Mac (\r) line endings are accepted and normalized to \n in the output.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove line numbers from text?

Paste the numbered text into the input box and the denumbered version appears instantly in the result box. Copy it or download it as a .txt file.

Which numbering styles are detected automatically?

Auto-detect handles 1. and 1) styles, bracketed [1] and parenthesized (1) numbers, colon 1: prefixes, and 1 - dashes, including multi-digit and indented numbers.

What if my numbering looks different?

Switch Style to Custom pattern and type a JavaScript regex for the prefix, for example STEP-\d+: for STEP-1: lines. The pattern is anchored to the start of each line, so do not include the ^ anchor yourself.

Can I drop lines that have no number?

Yes. Turn on Keep only numbered lines and any line without a detected prefix is removed from the output instead of being kept.

What happens to lines without numbers?

By default they are kept unchanged, so mixed content like headings between numbered items stays in place. Only the matching prefix is removed from numbered lines.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Denumbering runs in your browser with JavaScript and nothing is sent to a server. Inputs under 200 KB are kept in your browser's local storage so they are still there when you come back.
